A Train Garden in Winston Heights & An Afternoon at Tuxedo Play Park

June 13, 2026

Sometimes the best things in a community aren't advertised. They're discovered through a conversation at a birthday party.

That's how we met Ricky — a train hobbyist in Winston Heights who opens his backyard several times each spring and summer to share something pretty special: a sprawling outdoor garden railway with multiple loops of G-scale track running through hand-built miniature landscapes.

We first connected at Iron Horse Park in Airdrie during a baby friend's birthday party a few weeks back. Today, Ricky hosted an open house at his home in Winston Heights, and it did not disappoint.

What You'll See

  • Multiple train loops winding through realistic terrain — mossy boulders, small evergreens, wildflowers, and gravel beds that look like real railway ballast
  • A detailed station platform with miniature passengers, luggage, crates, even a vintage Coca-Cola machine
  • A locomotive pulling freight cars through curves carved into the landscape
  • A pond with clear water, tiny boats docked on stone shores, a waterfall cascading over stacked rockwork
  • Hidden scene-setters everywhere — a deer in the rocks, figures going about their day, and yes, some surprisingly buff mini figures in bikinis by the falls 😂

Our daughter loved following the trains around the loops and spotting the little surprises hidden in the scenery. It's like a treasure hunt in someone's backyard.

After the Trains: Tuxedo Play Park

Since we were already in the area with friends, we took a short 5-minute drive over to Tuxedo Play Park in the Tuxedo community — and it's a gem.

Tuxedo Play Park — interactive panels, climbing structure, swings, and soft turf throughout

The park has a great mix: interactive play panels with gears and sensory elements for younger kids, a climbing structure with a green slide, swings, and soft turf throughout. Shady trees, open space, and a layout that makes it easy to keep an eye on little ones while they explore. The kids had an excellent time — it's the kind of playground you can easily spend a couple hours at without anyone getting bored.
