Calgary Family Support
Family therapy in Calgary
Needing therapy doesn't mean your family is broken. It means you're investing in it. Calgary has accessible options — including free — for families with young children. Here's how to navigate them.
When families consider therapy
Family therapy isn't only for crises. Calgary parents seek counselling for many reasons: adjusting to life with a new baby, co-parenting conflicts, a child's behavioural challenges, postpartum depression, or simply feeling overwhelmed by the early years.
What therapy provides that informal support can't: a neutral third party trained to see patterns you're too close to see, and evidence-based techniques tailored to your specific family dynamics.

What to expect from family therapy
If you've never been to therapy, the unknown can feel daunting. Here's what actually happens.
First session
Your therapist will ask about what brought you in, your family structure, and what you'd like to change. This is an assessment, not a test. They're gathering context, not judging your family.
Setting goals
Together, you'll identify 2–3 specific, measurable goals. Not "be a better parent" — more like "reduce morning conflicts to zero raised voices by month three."
Ongoing work
Most family therapy is short-term (8–12 sessions). You'll get homework — things to practice between sessions. The real change happens in your daily interactions, not in the therapist's office.
