FRN Program

Free parenting classes
in Calgary

Group courses and single workshops on the things parents actually deal with — sleep, behaviour, anxiety, positive parenting, and more. No referral needed. Just find a class and register.

What are FRN parenting classes?

They're exactly what they sound like — classes where you learn about parenting, alongside other parents who are dealing with the same stuff. Some are multi-week courses (you commit to showing up weekly for 4-8 weeks). Others are one-off workshops on a specific topic. You sit with a facilitator and a group of parents, and you learn real strategies you can use at home.

The vibe is not school. It's more like a guided conversation. You'll hear from other parents who are struggling with the same things. The facilitator shares research-backed approaches, but the room is full of real parents with real kids, and the discussion reflects that.

Families Matter is the biggest provider — they run 12 multi-session courses and 18 single workshops across the city. Trellis Society, Closer to Home, and other hubs also offer group parenting programs. Different zones have different schedules, so check what's available near you.

What they cover

Topics you'll find

Sleep

Setting up routines, dealing with night wakings, transitioning from crib to bed, and all the sleep challenges that come with little humans.

Behaviour

Tantrums, hitting, defiance, not listening — the everyday stuff that makes you feel like you're doing it wrong (you're not). Real strategies that work.

Anxiety & Emotions

Helping kids manage big feelings, understanding childhood anxiety, building emotional resilience — in your kids and yourself.

Positive Parenting

Evidence-based approaches to discipline that actually work without damaging your relationship with your kid. It's not permissive parenting — it's effective parenting.

Child Development

What's normal at each age, when to be concerned, how to support your child's growth and learning without turning into their teacher.

Co-Parenting

Navigating parenting with a partner or co-parent when you don't agree on everything. Communication, consistency, and shared goals.

Common questions

Parenting Classes FAQ

Are parenting classes only for "bad" parents?

No. Parenting classes are for any parent who wants to learn. That's it. Most parents who attend are regular people dealing with regular challenges — sleep regressions, toddler tantrums, kid anxiety. Wanting to learn better strategies doesn't mean you're failing.

Can I bring my kids?

Generally, parenting classes are for adults only. Some programs offer childcare during the class — ask when you register. Children's Cottage, Trellis, and Families Matter sometimes have child development programming running alongside parent classes.

What if I miss a session in a multi-week course?

Life happens. Talk to the facilitator — most programs are flexible and can help you catch up. Don't let missing one session stop you from joining.

Are classes available in languages other than English?

CIWA offers cross-cultural parenting classes in multiple languages for immigrant families. Some other providers may have multilingual facilitators. Ask your zone what's available.

How do I know which class is right for me?

Call your zone's provider and tell them what you're dealing with. They'll recommend the right course or workshop. You don't have to figure it out alone — that's literally what they're there for.
